What's great about the 90s is the music scenes were so different. I was born in 73 so I was a lot older than you when the 90s began. My musical tastes were already solidified and the music coming out of Seattle from around 89-94 only increased my love of heavy, rock music.

As for the 80s though, it's more than just hair metal and Huey Lewis (thankfully), Post punk and New Wave, which led directly into Alternative, flourished in the 80s and was great. If you've never given any of it a shot, you might find that you'll like it.
